Dar Filettaro a Santa Barbara
(ph. 06 686 40 18; Largo dei Librari, 88 - Rome). Off Via dei Giubbonari
it is deep-fried salted cod. The fish fillets, which literally melt
in the mouth, are presented wrapped in paper, and you eat them with
your fingers rather than with a knife and fork. Various antipasto
dishes, salads (including a Roman favourite of puntarelle with an
anchovy and garlic dressing) and desserts are also available. You
can satisfy moderate hunger and thirst for around 6.00 to 9.00 euro.

La Campana

- Rome). It is at the top end of Via della Scrofa, is believed to
be Rome's oldest restaurant. Its distinctive Roman ambience and food,
without the usual noise and confusion make it an eternal favourite.

institution and has been serving Roman Jewish cooking for years (the
deep-fried artichokes are especially good). The location - in the
heart of the ghetto, right next to the ancient Portico d'Ottavia -
can't be beaten, especially if you get a table on the footpath. A

Navona - Rome).It is a Roman institution and is open every day. Its
large pizzas would feed an army and deserve their reputation as among
the best (and best values in Rome. Expect to join a queue if you arrive
after 9 pm and don't be surprised if you end up sbaring a table. Pizzas
are around 5.00 to 7.00 euro, a litre of wine costs 4.00 euro and
the cover charge is 1.00 euro. |
Trattoria Pizzeria da Francesco

from 5.00 to 7.00 euro and a good selection of antipasto and vegetables.

Trattoria Polese

Emanuele II). You can eat outside beneath a huge fig tree. lt's better
value for a pizza (4.50 to 7.00 euro) than a full meal (around 20.00
euro) but it's a good bet if you don't have time to waste wandering
off the main thoroughfare. It is closed on Tuesday. |
