Rome Restaurants in the Navona - Campo de' Fiori area

Hi! We are Mauro and Paola, your personal Rome guides. Let us tell you what to see and what to do in Rome. Piazza Navona is a popular gathering place for Romans and tourists alike. Take time to relax on one of the stone benches and watch the artists who gather in the piazza to do their work, have your "tarocchi" (tarot cards) read, or pay top prices to enjoy a drink at one of the outdoor cafés, such as Tre Scalini. The piazza is best avoided from early December until 6 January when a gaudy market and mini funfair take over. Campo de' fiori is a lively piazza where a flower and vegetable market is held every morning except Sunday. Now lined with bars and trattorie (restaurants).

Meat

Albistrò
(ph. 06 686 52 74; Via dei Banchi Vecchi, 140/a - Rome). lt's the place to go if you want something other than Roman cuisine, as the strictly seasonal menu has an international flavour (one of the owners is Swiss). Prices are at the higher end of the budget range (around 25.00 euro for three courses), but it is a delightful place with good service and excellent wines at reasonabie prices. It is closed on Wednesday and booking is essential on weekends.
Grappolo d'Oro
(ph. 06 686 41 18; Piazza della Cancelleria, between Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori - Rome). It serves excellent-quality, traditional Roman food for around 20.00 euro for a full meal. It is closed on Sunday.
Hosteria Romanesca
(ph. 06 686 40 24; Piazza Campo de’ Fiori - Rome). It is tiny, so arrive early in winter, when there are no outdoor tables. Pasta courses cost 6.00 to 8.00 euro an a full meal will set you back by around 20.00 euro . It is closed on Monday.

Typical

Al Pompiere
(ph. 06 686 83 77; Via Santa Maria de' Calderari, 38 - Jewish quarter - Rome). A huge first-floor dining room wìth frescoed ceilings. Its prices are reasonable and the food is great. Try the carciofi alla giudia and keep some room for a slice of ricotta and sour plum tart supplied by the Jewish bakery around the corner. It is closed on Sunday.
Dar Filettaro a Santa Barbara
(ph. 06 686 40 18; Largo dei Librari, 88 - Rome). Off Via dei Giubbonari it is deep-fried salted cod. The fish fillets, which literally melt in the mouth, are presented wrapped in paper, and you eat them with your fingers rather than with a knife and fork. You can satisfy moderate hunger and thirst for around 6.00 to 9.00 euro. It is closed on Sunday
La Campana

Its distinctive Roman ambience and food, without the usual noise and confusion make it an eternal favourite. It is closed on Monday. A meal will cost around 35.00 euro.
La Carbonara
(ph. 06 68 64 783; Piazza Campo de' Fiori - Rome). It is a consistently good restaurant, serving traditional Roman fare at honest prices. As the name might suggest, it is known for its spaghetti alla carbonara. A meal will cost around 35.00 euro for a full meal. It is closed on Tuesday.
Da Giggetto
(ph. 06 686 11 06; Via del Portico di Ottavia - Rome). It is a local institution and has been serving Roman Jewish cooking for years (the deep-fried artichokes are especially good). The location - in the heart of the ghetto, right next to the ancient Portico d'Ottavia - can't be beaten, especially if you get a table on the footpath. A meal should cost under 30.00 euro. It is closed on Monday.
Pizza

Trattoria Polese
(ph. 06 686 17 09; Piazza Sforza Cesarini, 40 - Across Corso Vittorio Emanuele II). You can eat outside beneath a huge fig tree. lt's better value for a pizza (4.50 to 7.00 euro) than a full meal (around 20.00 euro) but it's a good bet if you don't have time to waste wandering off the main thoroughfare. It is closed on Tuesday.
