Italian cooking. It has an attractive courtyard, which is used as
a winter garden in the colder months and is well priced. There's a
three-course tourist menu including wine for 20.00 euro, but the restaurant
also offers single meat dishes served with vegetables that are a filling
meal in themselves for 8.00 to 10.00 euro. It is popular with journalists,
writers and proprietors of the nearby antiques shops. Try the exceptionally
good "Spaghetti all'Otello" which is a secret recipe. It
is closed on Sunday.. |
Da Gino

of the old school with old-fashioned prices. lt's always full and
popular with politicians and joumalists, especially at lunchtime.
Try the home-made fettuccine cooked with peas and guanciale (bacon
made from the pig's cheek) or the "Coniglio al vino bianco"
(rabbit cooked in white wine). It is closed on Sunday |
Hostaria Giulio

between Via Monserrato and Via Giulia, is another good-value family-run
establishment serving traditional fare. |
Osteria dell'Ingegno
(ph. 06 678 06 62; Piazza della Pietra, 45 - near Piazza Colonna -
Rome). It is new on the dining scene in Roman terms. The cuisine is
central Italian with an international twist. Pasta dishes start at
8.00 euro and a full meal will set you back around 25.00 euro. It
is closed on Sunday. |
Il Bacaro
(ph. 06 686 41 10; Via degli Spagnoli, 27 - Rome). Around the corner
from the Pantheon. The pasta and risotto dishes are imaginative and
delicious and they do great things with beef and veal. lt's got an
excellent (and well-deserved) reputation, booking is essential. It
is closed on Sunday. A meal with wine will cost 30.00 to 40.00 euro.

La Rosetta
(ph. 06 683 08 841; Via della Rosetta, 8-9 - Rome). Near the Pantheon,
it is without doubt the best seafood restaurant in Rome. The menu
features innovative combinations of flavours and ingredients, and
the owner-chef is regarded as one of the best in Italy. But reputations
come at a price: expect to part with at least 70.00 euro for a memorable
meal here. It is closed on Sunday and booking is essential. |
