The Fontana di Trevi is certainly the most famous and spectacular
fountain in Rome, made even more famous by the the night-time wading
of Anita Ekberg in Fellini's film La dolce vita. Completely
dominating a tiny Piazza, it was designed by Nicola Salvi in 1732.
The famous custom is throw a coin into the fountain (over your shoulder
while facing away) to ensure you return to Rome. For a second coin
you can make a wish. The terraces around the fountain are always
packed with tourists throwing coins. Italian currency goes into
city council coffers and the foreign coins are given to the Red
Cross.
