The Colosseo (Colosseum), originally known as the Flavian
Amphitheatre, after the family name of Vespasian, it was inaugurated
by his son Titus in 80 AD (the construction was started by Vespasian
in 72 AD). The massive structure could seat more than 50.000 (the
4th century figure of 87.000 is disputed). More
info about Colosseo
On the western side of the Colosseo is the triumphal arch built
to honour Constantine (Arco di Costantino) following his
victory over Maxentius at the battle of the Milvian Bridge (near
the present-day Zona Olimpica, north-west of the Villa Borghese)
in 312 AD. |
